  - First World War
  Today all terms are acceptable; with WW1 being more prominent in Google Trends. However, during that time, society believed that the on coming storm was to be the largest ever known. Certainly in Europe since the Napoleonic Wars. The number of countries and men mobilised that were caught up, put the War on an unbelievable scale. The enormity of it suggested, it may have well been, Armageddon. Thus, giving it a name that reflects its enormous scale. They would have known it as the European or Great War. Today, because of the subsequent world war, with almost equal scale, we now more frequently refer to the Great War as the World War 1
